Pesticide sales in Brazil jumped from $ 2 billion in 2001 to over $ 8.5 billion in 2011. Since 2009, the country is the world’s largest consumer of these substances, with an average of one million tonnes per year, equivalent to 5.2 kg of poison per capita. The US average consumption in 2012 was 1.8 kg per capita. In the last decade, the country’s pesticide market grew 190% higher rate than the world market in the same period (93%).
